SMARTPLAY Chosen For Launch Of Power Lotto

EDGEWATER PARK, NJ (July 8, 2008) - The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office ("PCSO") has introduced a new game called “Power Lotto”.  SMARTPLAY was chosen to supply the draw machines by both Philippine Gaming Management Corporation ("PGMC") for Luzon and the Pacific Online Systems Corporation ("POSC") for Visayas and Mindanao.

After much consideration, the Saturn model was chosen by both PGMC and POSC.  “We could not be happier to continue our long time relationship with both groups” noted David Michaud, president of SMARTPLAY.

The ‘Philippine Star’ reports PCSO chairman Sergio Valencia said “We are introducing the most exciting lottery (game) patterned after Power Lotto (games in other countries).”

They are hoping that the new game will generate an additional P149 million in charity funds during the first six months of its operation to help their less fortunate countrymen.

According to Paul Conejos from POSC, “Smartplay has been doing a big part for the whole operation by providing highly dependable and reliable draw machines.  As a result, when the time came to buy new draw equipment, POSC instead of venturing into a new draw machine manufacturer, stuck with Smartplay because of their excellent services and high quality products.”

Hermie Cuba from PGMC added, “We chose Smartplay draw machines for so many reasons, such as their durability, sleek look, modern technology and user friendliness.”

Established in 1993, Smartplay is dedicated to the creative design, development and manufacture of lottery drawing equipment.  Over the years their product line has evolved in response to their clients’ needs by incorporating the latest technology.  Thus, they have maintained their position as the international leader in the area of lottery drawing machines and specialized game show equipment.  Smartplay is consistently chosen above other manufacturers due to their reputation for quality and reliability.  Because of this, they are proud to be the choice of the world’s most prestigious lotteries.

Maryland Lottery Sales Exceed $1.673 Billion Mark

BALTIMORE, Maryland (July 7, 2008) – The Maryland Lottery announced today that it has achieved its 11th straight year of record sales, topping the $1.673 billion dollar mark and surpassing State estimates for the fiscal year. The Lottery also exceeded its revenue target, raising $529 million in total revenue for the State of Maryland for Fiscal Year 2008. Records were set in every major category, including total sales, prizes paid to players, commissions earned by Lottery retailers and revenues returned to the State to help support vital state-funded programs and services.

The revenue generated by the Maryland Lottery helps us move our State forward and provide the programs and services that the people of Maryland depend on,” said Governor O’Malley. “We have closed an inherited $1.7 billion structural deficit and made historic investments for our shared priorities. This revenue helps our One Maryland continue that progress.”

Fiscal year-end highlights include:

  • Sales of over $1.673 billion, an increase of almost $96 million, or 6.1% over last year;
  • Revenues of more than $529 million, a $35 million increase over last fiscal year;
  • Prizes paid to players reached more than $967 million, reflecting an increase of more than $48 million over last year; and
  • Commissions earned by retailers totaled nearly $118 million, an increase of more than $5.6 million over last year.

While sales hit the highest level ever, operational expenses remained low, finishing the year at an estimated 3.5% of total sales, making the Maryland Lottery one of the most efficient in the industry.

Individual Lottery games also posted record sales. Instant games were robust, exceeding $513.8 million in sales, showing a significant increase for the 11th straight year. Top-sellers in the scratch-off category for the year include Set for Life and Mega Bucks Jackpot.

The Lottery’s jackpot games -- Multi-Match, Mega Millions and Bonus Match 5 -- continued to perform well, with combined sales for all jackpot games totaling more than $184 million, an increase of $32.8 million, or 20.9% over last year’s sales. Mega Millions, the Lottery’s multi-state jackpot game, brought in over $129.4 million in sales and produced over 3.2 million winners, including 27 second-tier winners, 199 third-tier winners and two top-tier Mega Millions jackpot winners

We are thrilled to achieve our 11th year of record sales,” said Lottery Director Buddy Roogow. “However, we recognize that with energy and gas prices on the rise, consumers have less discretionary income. As a result, FY ’09 will pose significant challenges to the Lottery in its efforts to achieve another record-breaking year.”

The Maryland Lottery was launched in 1973. Since its inception, the Agency has contributed more than $10.7 billion to the State to support programs including education, public safety, public health, economic development, and the environment. Over $15.6 billion has been paid to players in the form of jackpots and prizes, while Maryland businesses have received over $1.6 billion in commissions for selling Lottery products.

Scientific Games Reaches Agreement with California Horse Racing Board

NEW YORK, USA (July 10, 2008) -- Scientific Games Racing, LLC (SGR), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scientific Games (Nasdaq: SGMS), announced today an agreement with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) regarding the CHRB investigation of the software programming in the Quick-Pick software of SGR's BetJet terminal -- a terminal that was introduced for use in California beginning in July 2007.

The terms of the agreement include the following:

  • SGR implemented its software enhancements on BetJets and non-BetJet terminals under the supervision of the CHRB in order to disable the Quick-Pick betting function until such time, if ever, Quick-Pick betting is allowed by the CHRB;
  • SGR will reimburse the CHRB for the costs of the CHRB investigation into this matter;
  • SGR will make equal voluntary payments to the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and the California Thoroughbred Health Foundation to support backstretch working family health services;
  • SGR will pay refunds to people who placed Quick-Pick bets at BetJet terminals in California between July 1, 2007 and May 17, 2008, as long as the person can establish through legitimate proof, including, but not limited to, a ticket stub, that they placed said bet. This commitment will extend until June 2, 2009;
  • SGR will report every month for six months, and again on July 3, 2009, to the CHRB on the status of the implementation of the software enhancements to correct the BetJet programming error and consumer claims, if any. To further protect the wagering public, SGR shall also conduct a quality assurance review of its systems and confirm to the CHRB annually the integrity of its systems and that such systems are in good working order;
  • No further administrative action arising from the foregoing facts will be taken by the CHRB against SGR or its affiliated companies, directors, officers or employees.

Richard B. Shapiro, Chairman of the CHRB, stated: "We have found no evidence of intentional misconduct in the programming glitch nor do we find any effort to conceal the error from the public. As SGR management became aware and involved, the Company cooperated with our review and helped bring this matter to closure. We are pleased that SGR will generously contribute to horseracing charities and believe this agreement is in the best interests of both consumers and racing in California."

Kirk Breed, Executive Director of the CHRB, added: "While Quick-Pick is not a popular form of wagering, it is our responsibility to ensure both the public confidence in all forms of wagering allowed and that everyone has a fair chance to win or lose in all forms of regulated gaming."

Brooks Pierce, President of SGR, stated: "We are grateful to the CHRB for working with us to help bring this matter to a close and we are confident in the integrity of our system."

Hughes to Provide Broadband Satellite System for Spanish Lottery

Five-Year Contract with Spain’s Leading Gaming Technology Company Includes Redundant HN System and over 2800 Broadband Routers

GERMANTOWN, Maryland, USA (July 8, 2008) -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite network solutions and services, today announced that Sistemas Tecnicos de Loterias del Estado (STL) has awarded its wholly owned subsidiary, HNS Ltd., a contract to provide a geographically redundant HN System Network Operations Center (NOC), 2800 HN7700S broadband satellite routers, and support/maintenance services for five years.

Advertisement

STL provides information technology and telecommunications services to the Entidad Publico Empresarial Loterias y Apuestas del Estado Espanol (LAE), the Spanish state lottery authority.  Handling over two million lottery transactions per year, STL is Spain’s leading gaming technology and telecommunications company.

We issued an RFP in order to find the most suitable communications solution for our lower volume, more remote point-of-sales sites,” said Alfonso Pedro Fernandez Garcia, STL’s Director of Communications and New Sales Channels. “We evaluated mobile communications, DSL, and satellite IP technologies, and from 15 proposals concluded that the best balance among Quality of Service (QoS) assurance, cost per transaction, and coverage would be provided by a satellite IP solution. We chose the HN System from Hughes because of the capabilities of the HN7700S platform and our long-standing relationship with Hughes. As we are migrating from X.25 to pure IP, we needed the latest, state-of-the-art equipment which will enable us to provide better service quality and enable future broadband applications.

This agreement builds upon our successful 10 year relationship with STL and is evidence of the strategic importance of the lottery sector to Hughes and our leadership in serving it, following major contracts with GTECH in the US and Camelot in the UK,” said Luigi Pagni, vice president, Sales and Marketing of Hughes Europe. “STL will now enjoy the benefits of our latest HN System platform which is based on the world’s most widely deployed standard, IPoS/DVBS2 with ACM (adaptive coding modulation), yielding higher throughputs and more efficient bandwidth utilization.” Installation of the HN System NOCs began in May and of the remote satellite terminals shortly thereafter, with rollout scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2009.

Even Losers Can Win With New Lottery Competition

SOUTH AFRICA (July 2, 2008) -- National Lottery operator Gidani’s new competition supports the proverb: If at first you don’t succeed, try again.

It will make losers become winners by giving them the chance to enter non-winning LOTTO and Scratchcard tickets into a draw and stand the chance of winning 200 gift vouchers to the value of R10 000 each.

Advertisement

Thembi Tulwana, Gidani’s Public Affairs Executive, said from 3 July until 3 August, players will get a second chance of winning with LOTTO and Wina Manje Scratchcards.

Players who have non-winning tickets will be urged not to give up too easily because persistence pays off in the end.

Instead of throwing away a non-winning ticket, players are urged to enter the competition and hold onto these tickets which could be drawn for gift vouchers for electronic goods worth R10 000 each redeemable at any Makro store in the country,” said Ms Tulwana.

To enter the competition, a player must purchase a LOTTO ticket to the value of R21 or more and any two Scratchcards.

Players must SMS the coupon number of the non-winning LOTTO ticket and the unique number in the scratch area of one non-winning Scratchcard to 34113 to enter. The player will receive an SMS confirming entry.

Ms Tulwana said draws will take place weekly, with the first draw taking place on 10 July.

This exciting competition will prove that two losses can equal a win.”

Winners will be notified telephonically and after verification of identity, will receive the vouchers by courier to their homes,” she said.

Unique Partnership Puts ‘Happy Cows’ on Lottery Tickets

Happy Cows

SACRAMENTO, California, USA (July 7, 2008) -- You’ve seen them grazing on television screens, and now the popular Happy Cows are gracing the California Lottery’s latest Scratchers® tickets.

The Lottery and the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) expect the combination to be a hit, and they may be right, simply because an astounding 80 percent of American women recognize Diane, Janice, Sadie and Vicki.

We’re please to combine the Happy Cows’ popularity with the fun and excitement of California’s Lottery,” said Stan Andre, CEO of the California Milk Advisory Board. “As our cows ask, ‘Have you scratched a cow lately?’”

The cross promotion allows the Lottery to use the Happy Cows’ names and images as well as the Real California Milk logo on a version of Scratchers tickets that sells for $1 each.

This is a first for the California Lottery and for the California Milk Advisory Board,” said California Lottery Director Joan Borucki. “This partnership between two state entities is an exciting one. It takes two of California’s most popular products – Lottery tickets and Real California Milk– and combines them in a way that has never been done before!

Joint promotions appear on both the California Lottery’s Web site (www.calottery.com/happycows) and on the CMAB’s Web site (www.RealCaliforniaMilk.com).  Twenty-five million tickets will be printed, and there will be “cow-related” games and events as part of the Orange County Fair, Ventura County Fair, California State Fair and the Los Angeles County Fair. Promotional items such as plush cows, shirts, caps, travel mugs, magnets and stickers will be given out as prizes at these events.
