Iowa Lottery
Celebrates 100 Years of John Wayne With New Instant-Scratch
Game Lottery Teams Up With
Winterset Community For Centennial Celebration
DES MOINES, Iowa (May 18,
2007) -- The Iowa Lottery is celebrating 100
years of John Wayne with a new instant-scratch game honoring The
Duke. The lottery has partnered with Wayne
Enterprises and John Wayne's birthplace to recognize what would have been his
100th birthday. Wayne was born in Winterset on May 26, 1907. To celebrate the
Academy award-winning actor and Winterset's activities to mark his birthday,
the lottery is offering The Duke, a $2 scratch game that
bears three distinct images of John Wayne. We're proud to honor one of Hollywood's most
acclaimed actors with a lottery game, said Iowa Lottery CEO Dr. Ed
Stanek. John Wayne was and continues to be an enduring icon that
symbolizes not only Iowa, but American values.
Tickets in the John Wayne scratch game went on sale Monday
and are available at lottery retailers statewide. The tickets feature inspiring
western images of Wayne that recall his prolific 50-year career.
Players try to match any of their numbers to
the winning numbers on each ticket to win the prize shown
for that number. If players find a horseshoe next to a prize, they win that
prize instantly. The top prize in The Duke is $10,000.
The Iowa Lottery will also
feature the new scratch tickets at the John Wayne Birthday Centennial
Celebration, May 25-27, at the Madison County Fairgrounds in Winterset.
Organizers expect the festival to bring more than 25,000 fans to the area. The
lottery will give away John Wayne scratch tickets and other John Wayne items
while supplies last to those who stop by the lottery's festival tent on
Saturday, May 26, at the fairgrounds. The Centennial
Celebration will also feature a parade, stunt horse riders, concerts and
various vendors. Michael Martin Murphey, America's No. 1-selling cowboy music
singer, will sing memorable selections inspired by John Wayne's career, while
Cowboy Symposiums will be led by several of John Wayne's co-stars like Dean
Smith, Gregg Palmer and Edward Faulkner. Members of John Wayne's family are
also expected to attend the celebration and groundbreaking of the new John
Wayne Museum that will be built in Winterset. The John
Wayne scratch game is licensed by New York-based
Scientific Games Corp. Scientific Games
will donate about $2,400 as a percentage of the licensing fee for the game to
the construction of the new John Wayne Museum in Winterset. A representative
from Sci-Games and a member of the Wayne family will present a check at the
groundbreaking of the new museum at noon on May 26. SOURCE: The Iowa Lottery.
