Svenska Spel to Take Over Bingo Halls
Article from Sweden By:
Göran Wessberg
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (November 24, 2005) --
Last week 18 of the 100 bingo halls in Sweden signed a contract with
Svenska Spel which will take over the
administration of the gaming activities at their places. More bingo halls may
follow in these footsteps. Bingo has been very popular in Sweden for the last
40 years with a turnover of 200 million euro annually but has seen a decline in
sales recently. Local Swedish sports benefit from the revenue of the bingo
halls. They have been worried that they will receive less money for their
activities and are therefore backing this takeover.
 |
Svenska Spel has had a close cooperation
with the Swedish Bingo Alliance - Swebico - for the last five years since
Parliament decided the lottery could install 500 video lottery terminals (VLTs) on top of the
7 000 that already existed if they were located to the bingo halls - a maximum
of 5 in each. The profit from these machines named Miss Vegas has been
channeled to Swedish sport.
Svenska Spel will invest 20 million US
dollar to modernize and refurbish the 18 bingo halls with a modern design and
offer the visitors new games. Beside the traditional bingo varieties you will
also be able to participate in the very popular interactive bingo that Svenska
Spel has on its website.
Jesper Kärrbrink, CEO Svenska Spel
comments: "I am looking forward to working closer together with the bingo
halls and the Swedish Bingo Movement. Thus we will be able to assist in
financing and supporting local sports clubs. At the same time we can make use
of our work with Corporate Social Responsibility and increase the responsible
gaming awareness in this environment. This I think is very important and
very inspiring."
Svenska Spel already operates draw games,
scratch tickets, sports betting, interactive gaming, VLTs and casinos.

Are You A Collector of Lottery Tickets and Related Memorabilia?
MISSOURI, USA (November 14, 2005) -- Do
you collect Lottery tickets and related memorabilia? If so, you might want to
join the Global Lottery Collectors Society!
The Global Lottery
Collectors Society (GLCS) is an international club of
approximately 400 Lotologists - people who collect and trade lottery tickets
and memorabilia. The group was formed in 1989, when two men, one from New
Jersey and one from Pennsylvania, contacted each other through a classified ad
and began exchanging lottery paraphernalia. Thinking there might be others with
the same interest, they posted additional classified ads, and the
collectors society was born, initiating 20 members within the first year.
The society now includes a Web site at
www.lotterycollectors.com. At
this site, collectors can join the group and receive a monthly newsletter and a
catalog of tickets, in addition to other benefits.
Approximately 20 GLCS members met at the
17th annual convention last July in St. Louis to share information and trade
lottery collectibles.
Quotes from collectors:
"Its a mixed bag," said
Stephen Tuday of Georgia. "For every member there is a different technique:
some people are very much arm chair collectors; they may only collect from
their home state. They may be like me and try to get everything. They might be
die-hard gamblers, who just save their tickets on the side. It runs the
gamut." SOURCE: Missouri Lottery

Virginia Lottery Kicks Off Schools Win
Tour
RICHMOND, Virginia, USA (November 29, 2005) -- To increase
awareness of where all profits from the Virginia Lottery go, Lottery officials are
launching a new effort to get the message out to Virginians the
Schools-Win-Tour.
The tour consists of a speakers program in
which Lottery officials visit civic organizations, school groups and chambers
of commerce to speak about how Lottery profits are distributed to
Virginias public schools. Virginians are often not aware of
how schools benefit from the money generated by the Virginia Lottery each
year, said Lottery Interim Executive Director Donna M. VanCleave.
We want people to know that everyone benefits from the Lottery
regardless of whether they play.
In fiscal year 2005, the Virginia Lottery turned over more
than $423 million in profits for public education (K-12) in the Commonwealth of
Virginia. Those funds were distributed by the Virginia Department of Education
to every school district in the form of either direct or basic aid. The
Schools-Win-Tour kicks off on November 29. SOURCE:
