Massachusetts Lottery Posts Best Year Ever in
33-Year History FY05 Marks Second Consecutive Year of Record-Breaking Sales
and Local Aid Numbers
BRAINTREE, Massachusetts, USA (September
6, 2005) -- State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill and Lottery Executive Director
Joseph C. Sullivan today announced that the Massachusetts Lottery returned an estimated
$935 million in local aid to the Commonwealth for Fiscal Year 2005 - the
largest amount of local aid revenue in the 33-year history of the Lottery.
 |
Sales for FY05 soared to $4.48 billion,
exceeding the previous record of $4.38 billion, set in FY04, by more than 2.3
percent. This marks the second consecutive year that the Lottery has posted
record-breaking figures in sales and profit returned to the Commonwealth.
The Massachusetts Lottery
has a long and proud history of offering players exciting and entertaining
games, which has helped us become one of the most successful lotteries in the
nation, said Treasurer Cahill, who serves as Chairman of the Lottery.
Thanks to prudent management, strategic marketing and strong sales, we
are thrilled to have set another record year in FY05. The more successful
the Lottery, the more revenue generated for the Commonwealths 351 cities
and towns.
At $935 million, the profit to the state
increased by approximately $23 million, up from $912 million in FY04. The
amount of local aid distributed directly to municipalities in FY05 was capped
by the Legislature at $661 million, but cities and towns benefited from a
one-time additional allocation of $75 million last fall.
We had another winning year
for our players and municipalities at the Massachusetts Lottery, said
Lottery Executive Director Sullivan. The results are a reflection of
our entire organization and network of retail agents across the state. Our
focus will remain on offering fun and entertaining games to our players in
order to reach new levels of revenue growth, which allows us to fulfill our
mission to the states municipalities.
Strong instant ticket sales helped bolster
the Lotterys revenues, accounting for $3.13 billion or 70 percent of the
Lotterys total sales in FY05. The Lotterys $10 instant games -
Lifetime Spectacular, $725,000,000 Blockbuster, and $10,000,000 HoldEm
Poker - played a pivotal role in robust overall sales.

 |
The excitement around large jackpots
offered in the multi-state game, Mega Millions helped increase sales from
$95 million in FY04 to $97 million in FY05 representing a year-over-year
increase of 1.1 percent.
The Lottery also benefited from the
success of its newest jackpot game CASH WinFall. The game, introduced in
September 2004, contributed $41.8 million in sales for FY05 after being on the
market for less than ten months.
The Lotterys other online games
posted strong sales in FY05. Keno turned in $742 million in sales, while the
Numbers game saw sales of $352 million, and Mass Cash and Megabucks followed
with $43.8 million and $44.5 million, respectively.
* The FY 2005 sales
numbers are preliminary; final audited sales numbers will be released in
October.

The Gaming segment achieved revenue of
$1,195.4 million and EBITDA of $219.1 million for the twelve months ended 30
June 2005. The focus of the Gaming division during the year in the Victorian
market was on improving the product offering to customers, and establishing a
solid base from which to continue to improve performance. Tattersalls is
committed to responsible gaming, and continues to operate its Have Fun But Play
It Safe program throughout its venues.
During the year, the Gaming division
introduced 43 new games, implemented 5,123 game changes and installed 822 new
machines into its Victorian venues. 32.3% of the machines across the network
were linked to the jackpot system as at 30 June 2005. 20% of the venues were
refurbished, and two new venues were opened.
In 2006, Tattersalls will seek
approval to place an additional 140 machines across its Victorian venues,
taking the total number of machines expected to be in operation by the end of
June 2006 to 13,492, against the approved limit of 13,750. The development of
broader jackpot capabilities and functionality will continue in this financial
year, with the number of machines linked to jackpot systems forecast to
increase towards 40%. The business will maintain its focus on the quality of
its gaming venues, with 70 venues scheduled to be refurbished during 2006, and
the completion of the new club gaming venue at Caroline Springs in Victoria
scheduled for the second half of the 2006 financial year.
The rollout of gaming machines in South
Africa has progressed, with a better than expected performance of machines in
the field on a revenue-per-machine basis. At 30 June 2005 there were 195
machines operating in Western Cape in 41 venues. By mid August 2005 the number
of machines had increased to 251 across 54 venues, with continued favourable
revenue-per- machine performance.
Lotteries
The Lotteries segment produced a solid
result with revenue of $1,227.5 million and EBITDA of $28.5 million. Revenues
were helped by a 10 per cent price increase in Powerball introduced in February
2005. This was partially offset by a less than favourable Powerball jackpotting
occurrence through the 2005 financial year. To date in 2006, revenues are
tracking on forecast. There was a $22 million Powerball jackpot in August
2005.
The Lotteries division continued to focus
on improving its Victorian distribution channels. A new shop fitout was
installed in 18% of outlets during the year and the company achieved continued
strong growth in internet sales. Further upgrades to shop-fits are scheduled
for 2006 and 2007.
 |
In November 2004, the new EssNet Lottery system was
successfully implemented across our 924 outlets to improve system
effectiveness, functionality and game offerings. The full impact of these
benefits is expected to be delivered in the 2006 financial year and into the
future. In July, Tattersalls signed an agreement with Bill Express to
explore the feasibility of linking and sharing aspects of their retail data
communications networks and point of sale infrastructure. This is intended to
further leverage Tattersalls technology and enhance its distribution
strategy in the coming years.
Tattersalls registration of interest
for the grant of a new public lottery licence was lodged with the Victorian
Government in July 2005. Tattersalls has continuously held Victorian
lotteries licences since 1954 and with our long history of integrity, community
involvement and highly efficient operation, we would expect to be the front
runner for a new Victorian lottery licence.
Reflecting its ongoing game development
and enhancement, the company can confirm today that in conjunction with
National Lottery Bloc, it is participating in a change to the Oz Lotto game to
ensure its continued attractiveness to players. A new invigorated game will be
released later in this calendar year.
Financial Position
The company is in a strong financial
position with nearly $330 million of net cash on hand (net of debt and unpaid
prizes, and inclusive of the $300.2 million capital raising actually received
in July 2005) coming into the 2006 financial year. This financial position,
together with the stable revenue base and strong cash flow from operations,
underpins the companys ability to pay future dividends and to pursue
growth opportunities as they arise.

TOPEKA, Kansas, USA (September 2, 2005) --
The Kansas Lottery is helping commemorate the release of the Kansas quarter

Heads or Tails game has separate, alternating

Heads ticket features the front of the quarter. The
Tails ticket shows the buffalo and sunflowers that appear on
the back of the Kansas Quarter.

Oregon and Idaho Get Sales Boost with UNO® Scratch
Tickets
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, USA (September 6,
2005) -- Innovation and the UNO® brand recently brought success to the
Oregon and Idaho Lotteries, with both Lotteries seeing
tremendous sales of their UNO® instant tickets. On the heels of these
sales, other Lotteries are lining up to launch their own versions of
Americas favorite card game, and Idaho has reordered the game.
The Oregon Lottery launched its
UNO® scratch ticket in February 2005, and became the first Lottery to
introduce a ticket with four-color imaging. The $1 ticket features OGTs
innovative and unique multi-colored imaging with actual card symbols printed in
red, blue, green and black. The game was only supported by an oversize ticket,
and sales not only outpaced average $1 games by 31.5%, but also outsold more
than half Oregons $2 games and $3 games! Sixty-six percent of the game
was sold after only nine weeks on the market! We are very pleased with
the results, said Carol Hardy, Oregon Lottery Assistant Director for
Marketing. Its great to see how innovation can bring success to
the market. Our research suggested and sales confirmed: UNO® had a
strong appeal to our regular playing audience, and we believe it also reached
the 21-34 audience.
The
Idaho Lottery incorporated an innovative play action in its
UNO® game, and it paid off in a big way. Sales for Idahos $3 UNO®
game ranked higher than seven of its nine $5 tickets, and were 21% higher than
the average $3 game! Idaho also appealed to its emerging market
with point-of-sale as well as a creative television and radio campaign.
Were thrilled with the sales, stated Rebecca Arte Howell,
Idaho Lotterys Product Manager. This is a highly recognizable brand
with enormous popularity. The Idaho Lottery has reordered the game for
immediate launch.
In the face of this success, the Nebraska,
Washington, and Kansas Lotteries have signed on to launch their own UNO®
tickets later this year. The UNO® brand is a strong one that not only
appeals to our core players, but also to new and younger players, stated
Carla Schaefer, OGTs VP New Business Development. OGT has offered
the UNO® license to the lottery industry since June 2004, and were
excited to see UNO® scratch tickets continue to set sales
records.
